Module Description:

This module will provide VR counselors with little to no experience with deaf communities with essential information on connecting and working with deaf people. Despite progress and legal protections like the ADA, deaf people still face barriers in education and employment, including underemployment, limited access to qualified professionals, and inadequate pre-employment services. Understanding the diversity of deaf experiences, promoting self-determination, and offering culturally appropriate support is key to achieving equitable outcomes and facilitating opportunities.

Learning objectives - Participants will be able to:

  • Identify barriers to employment commonly faced by deaf people.
  • Understand the historical trends in education and employment for deaf people.
  • Analyze the current employment outlook and statistics for deaf people.
  • List deaf-centered practices to support deaf VR consumers.
